A STRONG WALL OF IMMUNITY WAS BUILT - THE PANDEMIC IS IN DECLINE

Filenews 20 January 2022 - by Evangelia Sizopoulou

The downward trend of coronavirus cases and positivity rates in recent days, combined with the increase in the rate of vaccinations in the general population, as well as the number of citizens already infected and ill, show that a strong wall of immunity has been built.

According to the data analyzed in "F" by the epidemiologist Dr. Michalis Voniatis, in connection with the onslaught of the variant "Omikron" in recent weeks in the community, it appears that the pandemic is entering a declining course. Dr. Voniatis reports that more than 100,000 people have been infected and ill since October, i.e. around 11% of the population. At the same time, he notes that the positivity rate stands at 2% and something, combined with the reproduction rate of cases, which in the last week has been below 1%. All the above data in combination with the vaccination rate in the general population, which exceeds 70%, but also from the immunity that has been created in the community, allow experts to talk about defusing this health crisis.

However, Dr. Voniatis may refer to encouraging evidence about the course of "Omikron", but he stresses the need for caution as the danger persists. In addition, he said it is estimated that about 20% of the population is immune, sending the message that it is useful to continue vaccinations. Through vaccination, as Dr. Voniatis mentioned, immunity is increased and the chances of something else arising, which will find fertile ground to "hit" the community, are reduced.

Regarding the "Omikron" variant, which has spread, it continues to be less morbid compared to the "Delta". According to Dr. Voniatis, it has fewer and milder symptoms, which more closely resemble those of the common cold in combination with a sore throat.
