700 ASYLUM APPLICATIONS IN 18 DAYS - 19,000 UNDER CONSIDERATION

Migration flows continue at a tremendous pace in 2022, with the competent services now limited to the role of the processing of applications and only the most necessary ones having the necessary ones.

In the first 18 days of the new year, applications for political asylum have exceeded 700, which foresees that this year will also be ominous in terms of immigration. Already, the Interior Minister has announced that Lithuania's model will be studied in relation to the migration problem it faces due to Ukraine, while keeping close contact with the French Presidency of the EU to assist mainly in the return of migrants.

According to data obtained by "F", there are currently 19,000 asylum applications pending for examination, while in 2021, 16,549 applications have been examined – a record number – indicating that at the rate at which applications are submitted, there will be no clearance even in 2023. At the same time, the year that has just left, ended with 13,500 asylum seekers, many times higher than those that our country can accept, with the reception system under enormous pressure since it is beyond the capabilities for the standards created.

As mentioned competently in "F", at the moment the first reception and accommodation facilities barely accept other immigrants, while outside Pournara there are several people waiting their turn to be admitted to the Centre, and at the same time to the new structure in the area of Limnes in Menogeia, there are more than 600 migrants.

With these facts, the Government, through the Ministry of Interior, is planning the construction of the first pre-removal Center in the area of Limnes at a cost of more than €35 million, for which our country will ask for the support of the EU. At the same time, the Supreme Court last week gave the green light to Interior Minister Nikos Nouris to proceed with plans to create an International Protection Court in the Limnes area, so that migrant appeals can be examined on the spot, after the rejection of their asylum applications, in order to speed up their repatriation procedures.
