5,457 NEW CASES AND FIVE DEATHS - Tuesday

Five people died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 646, while new cases set a new negative record, with 5457 (positivity rate of 4.44%) detected by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 183,178.

A statement from the Ministry of Health states that 209 patients are hospitalized, of which 76 are in serious condition. 78% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

A total of 122,801 tests have been performed to detect the disease using the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 5 people who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19, concern:

- Woman, aged 73 years, who died on January 2nd in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- A man, aged 82, who died on January 3rd at Nicosia General Hospital.

- A man, aged 43, who died on January 4th in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- A man, aged 84, who died on January 4th at Paphos General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 55, who died on January 4th in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 646, of which:

  • 410 men (63.5%), and
  • 236 women (36.5%).

The average age of those voted by the disease is 76 years.

B. Hospitalized:

In total, 209 covid-19 patients are hospitalized in the hospitals of the CySEC, of which 76 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.

Of the 76 patients who are in serious condition, 32 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an off-ventilator Intensive Care Unit and 40 are in an Increased Care Unit.

C. Positive cases of COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 122,801 diagnoses made, 18,576 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 104,225 by the antigen rapid test, 5457 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting as follows:

  • 490 cases from 3,121 samples taken through the process of contact tracing of already confirmed cases.
  • 143 cases from 5,489 samples taken in the context of passenger screening at Larnaka and Paphos Airports.
  • 1067 cases from 9,286 samples taken through a private initiative.
  • 25 cases from 360 samples taken from the Microbiology Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 2715 cases from 70,186 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 1007 cases from 34,039 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method through the Ministry of Health's programme.
  • 10 cases from 317 samples taken in the framework of the referral program by Personal Doctors and control of special teams through the Public Health Clinics.

In addition, the following tests have been carried out without detecting a case:

  • 0 cases from 3 samples taken as part of checks in closed facilities.
