3,012 NEW CASES, FOUR DEATHS - Sunday

Another four deaths were announced by the Ministry of Health due to coronavirus, while another 3,012 cases were identified.

Specifically:

  • 4 people have died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 657.
  • 251 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 91 are in serious condition. 75.3% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
  • 17 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases), continue to be hospitalized intubated in a serious condition due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit.
  • A total of 139,709 tests have been performed to detect the disease using the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.
  • 3,012 (positivity rate: 2.16%) new cases of COVID-19 were identified by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 204,372.

Today's results are detailed.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 4 people who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19, concern:

- A man, aged 67, who died on January 8th in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 53 years, who died on January 8 at Larnaka General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 78, who died on January 8th at Nicosia General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 86 years, who died on January 9th at the Limassol General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 657, of which:

  • 413 men (62.9%), and
  • 244 women (37.1%).

The average age of those deceased from the disease is 75.9 years

*In error, 4 deaths were reported in the January 8th bulletin, while one death was a correction. Therefore the total of 657 deaths today is correct.

B. Hospitalized:

In total, 251 covid-19 patients are hospitalized in the hospitals of the CySEC, of which 91 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.

Of the 91 patients who are in serious condition, 29 are intubated, 3 are hospitalized in an off-ventilator Intensive Care Unit and 59 are in an Increased Care Unit.

C. Positive cases of COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 139,709 diagnoses performed, 8,701 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 131,008 by the antigen rapid test, 3,012 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting as follows:

  • 69 cases from 548 samples taken through the process of contact tracing of already confirmed cases.
  • 97 cases from 4,421 samples taken in the context of passenger screening at Larnaka and Paphos Airports.
  • 292 cases from 3,199 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 41 cases from 406 samples taken from the Microbiology Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 1,071 cases from 52,982 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 1,437 cases from 78,026 samples tested with the antigen rapid test method through the Ministry of Health's programme.
  • 5 cases from 127 samples taken in the framework of the referral program by Personal Physicians and control of special teams through the Public Health Clinics.
