2,351 NEW CASES, THREE DEATHS - Saturday 15 January

The Ministry of Health announces that today, January 15, 2022, three people have died from COVID-19, while 2,351 (positivity rate of 2.46%) are the new cases of the disease.

Initially the Ministry announced an death of an 88-year-old man, but then two more of our fellow citizens, aged 62 and 88, were added to the list.

Specifically:

- 3 people have died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 675.

- 270 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 88 are in serious condition. 74.08% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 20 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases), continue to be hospitalized intubated in a serious condition due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit.

- A total of 95,740 tests have been performed to detect the disease using the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

- 2,351 (positivity rate: 2.46%) new cases of COVID-19 were identified by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 223,767.

Today's results are detailed.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 3 people who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19, concern:

- A man, aged 88, who died on on January 14th at the Limassol General Hospital.

- A man, aged 62, who died on January 15th in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- A man, aged 88, who died on January 15 at the Famagusta General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 675, of which:

  • 425 men (63%), and
  • 250 women (37%).

The average age of those voted by the disease is 75.9 years.

B. Hospitalized:

In total, 270 covid-19 patients are hospitalized in the hospitals of the CySEC, of which 88 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.

Of the 88 patients who are in serious condition, 28 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an off-ventilator Intensive Care Unit and 56 are in an Increased Care Unit.

C. Positive cases of COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 95,740 diagnoses performed, 9,371 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 86,369 by the antigen rapid test, 2351 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting as follows:

  • 178 cases from 1,856 samples taken through the process of contact tracing of already confirmed cases.
  • 42 cases from 2,641 samples taken in the context of passenger screening at Larnaka and Paphos Airports.
  • 377 cases from 4,395 samples taken through a private initiative.
  • 34 cases from 307 samples taken from the Microbiology Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 971 cases from 49,505 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 747 cases from 36,864 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method through the Ministry of Health's programme.
  • 2 cases from 172 samples taken in the framework of the referral program by Personal Doctors and control of special teams through the Public Health Clinics.
