2,282 NEW CASES, 11 DEATHS [3 ON THE DAY] - Thursday 20 January

The Ministry of Health announces that from 1 January until today, 11 people have died, while today, January 20, three have died. Also 2,282 (positivity rate: 2.1%) are the new cases of the disease.

According to the ministry of health:

  • 11 deaths were announced with covid-19 as the final cause, bringing the total number of deaths to 700.
  • 244 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 81 are in serious condition. 72.55% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
  • 18 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases), continue to be hospitalized intubated in a serious condition due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit.
  • A total of 108,670 tests have been performed to detect the disease using the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.
  • 2,282 (positivity rate: 2.1%) new cases of COVID-19 were identified by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 235,364.

Today's results are detailed.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 11 deaths announced with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19, concern:

- Woman, aged 65, who died on January 1st in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- A man, aged 71, who died on January 8th at Nicosia General Hospital.

- A man, aged 70, who died on January 10th in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- A man, aged 70, who died on January 11th in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 85 years, who died on January 18th at Larnaka General Hospital.

- A man, aged 73 years, who died on January 19th in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 83 years, who died on January 19 at Larnaka General Hospital.

- A man, aged 63, who died on January 19th in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- A woman, aged 65, who died on January 20th in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 79, who died on January 20 at the Limassol General Hospital.

- A man, aged 87, who died on January 20th at the Limassol General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 700, of which:

  • 440 men (62.9%), and
  • 260 women (37.1%).

The average age of those voted by the disease is 76 years.

B. Hospitalized:

In total, 244 covid-19 patients are hospitalized in the hospitals of the CySEC, of which 81 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.

Of the 81 patients who are in serious condition, 34 are intubated, 3 are hospitalized in an Off-Ventilator Intensive Care Unit and 44 are in an Increased Care Unit.

C. Positive cases of COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 108,670 diagnoses performed, 6,547 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 102,123 by the antigen rapid test, 2282 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting as follows:

  • 70 cases from 821 samples taken through the process of contact tracing of already confirmed cases.
  • 50 cases from 2,321 samples taken in the context of passenger screening at Larnaka and Paphos Airports.
  • 307 cases from 2,980 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 29 cases from 317 samples taken from the Microbiology Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 1,144 cases from 49,047 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 678 cases from 53,076 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method through the Ministry of Health's programme.
  • 4 cases from 107 samples taken in the framework of the referral program by Personal Doctors and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.

In addition, the following tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:

  • 0 cases from 1 sample taken as part of checks in closed facilities.
