2,200 NEW CASES, FIVE DEATHS - Tuesday 18 January

Five people died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 689, while 2,200 new cases of COVID-19 were identified by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 230,856. The positivity rate is 2.1%.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Health, 257 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 89 are in serious condition. 69.65% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

In addition, 17 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases), continue to be hospitalized intubated in a serious condition due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit.

On Tuesday, a total of 104,965 tests have been performed to detect the disease using the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 5 people who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19, concern:

- A man, aged 89, who died on January 17th at Nicosia General Hospital.

- A man, aged 90 years, who died on January 18 at the General Hospital of Famagusta.

- Woman, aged 86, who died on January 18 at Paphos General Hospital.

- A man, aged 67, who died on January 18th at the Limassol General Hospital.

- A man, aged 83, who died on January 18 at the Limassol General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with covid-19 as the final cause is 689, of which:

  • 434 men (63%), and
  • 255 women (37%).

The average age of those voted by the disease is 76.1 years.

B. Hospitalized:

In total, 257 covid-19 patients are hospitalized in the hospitals of the CySEC, of which 89 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.

Of the 89 patients who are in serious condition, 38 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an off-ventilator Intensive Care Unit and 47 are in an Increased Care Unit.

C. Positive cases of COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 104,965 diagnoses performed, 8,483 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 96,482 by the antigen rapid test method, 2,200 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting as follows:

  • 74 cases from 1,263 samples taken through the process of contact tracing of already confirmed cases.
  • 54 cases from 2,607 samples taken in the context of passenger screening at Larnaka and Paphos Airports.
  • 336 cases from 4,034 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 38 cases from 388 samples taken from the Microbiology Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 1,050 cases from 45,251 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 642 cases from 51,231 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method through the Ministry of Health's programme.
  • 6 cases from 191 samples taken in the framework of the referral program by Personal Doctors and control of special teams through the Public Health Clinics.
