The University of Cyprus is in the final stretch for the commencement of the construction works of the new building facilities of the Medical School and Health Sciences "Nikos K. Shacolas". The contracts for the award of the contract to the contractor were signed yesterday, in the presence of the benefactor of the University of Cyprus, Nikos Shacolas. This agreement was signed on behalf of the University of Cyprus by the Rector Tasos Christofides and on behalf of the contractor A. Aristotelous (Construction) Ltd, the general manager of the company, Aristotle Aristotle.
The new building, which will house the Medical School, with a total gross area of about 8,500 square metres, will bear the name "Building of the Medical School and Health Sciences "Nikos K. Construction work is expected to begin on January 10, 2022 with the project scheduled to be completed in three years, i.e. in 2025.
The building facilities are the result of an international Architectural Competition, in which 63 design proposals from scientists in Cyprus, Greece, Spain, France, England, Portugal, Italy, Germany and Serbia participated. The First prize was awarded to Antonio Gonzalez Liñán and Antonio Gonzalez Cordón of the SV60 Arquitectos Architectural Firm located in Seville, Spain. The drawings, among others, include a) the classical logic of an enclosed building with a courtyard, b) the easy-to-read and flexible layout and c) the environmental approach resulting from the bioclimatic shell and the exploitation of topography.
The Project is financed by the loan of the European Investment Bank (EIB), the loan of the Development Bank of the Council of Europe (TASSE), the State and the revenues of the University of Cyprus, through the large donation of the "Nikos and Elpida Shacolas Foundation" of €9 million. The budget of the building amounts to €15 million (excluding VAT).
