PAPHOS -FREQUENT TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS RAISES CYCLE LANES ISSUE

Filenews 30 December 2021 - by Dora Christodoulou

The creation of an integrated cycling network in Paphos is characterized as a matter of priority by the competent authorities. This is because, on the one hand,  of the realization that the bicycle occupies an increasing part of the interests of citizens and, on the other hand, because of the realization that the infrastructure for cycling is non-existent, putting cyclists at risk.

The continuous new road accidents of the last period in various areas of Paphos, bring back to the forefront the need for the local authorities and the state to proceed with infrastructure works and improvements in the Paphos district for the safe use of the bicycle. The implementation of the design, however, is recognized as a difficult issue, since it requires study, design and development of an integrated cycling network that will be applicable, connective, integrated. Which is also sufficient for the Municipality of Paphos and the surrounding areas and also presents possibilities of connection with the nearby municipalities or even slightly more remote communities, providing safe routes and a cycling experience to its users.

The existing network of cycle paths that exists in Paphos is characterized as very poor and inadequate and is not used by those cyclists who would like to exercise in this way, since it is considered by many to be dangerous due to technical imperfections, which create conditions of reduced level of road safety. The issue, according to information provided by "F", came back to the fore yesterday, since in addition to the injury of the cyclist in Geroskipou recently, in three other cases at the Paphos Police Department, there were complaints from motorists this time about dangerous movement of cyclists on roads. Specifically, on the old Pafos-Limassol road, at the height of Koloni and Acheleia, as well as on the road of the Monastery of Agios Neophytos.

These are roads that are places of daily exercise for walkers and groups of cyclists.
