The Ministry of Health announces that today, December 17, 2021, one person has died from COVID-19, while 695 are the new cases of the disease.
Specifically:
- 1 person died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 617.
- 171 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 57 are in serious condition. 74.71% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
- 8 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases), continue to be hospitalized intubated in a serious condition due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit.
- A total of 82,410 tests have been performed to detect the disease using the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.
- 695 (positivity rate: 0.84% new cases of COVID-19 were identified by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 144,205.
Today's results are detailed.
A. Deaths from COVID-19:
The 1 person who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19, concerns:
- Woman, aged 62 years, who died on December 17th in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.
Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 617, of which:
- 393 men (63.7%), and
- 224 women (36.3%).
The average age of those voted by the disease is 75.8 years.
B. Hospitalized:
In total, 171 patients of covid-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the CySEC, of which 57 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.
Of the 57 patients who are in serious condition, 20 are intubated, 1 is hospitalized in an off-ventilator Intensive Care Unit and 36 in an Increased Care Unit.

C. Positive cases of COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):
Of the 82,410 diagnoses performed, 10,709 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 71,701 by the antigen rapid test, 695 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting as follows:
- 144 cases from 1,729 samples taken through the process of contact tracing of already confirmed cases.
- 40 cases from 5,210 samples taken in the context of passenger screening at Larnaka and Paphos Airports.
- 105 cases from 3,345 samples taken through a private initiative.
- 3 cases from 321 samples taken from the Microbiology Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
- 292 cases from 48,178 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
- 111 cases from 23,523 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method through the Ministry of Health's programme.
In addition, the following tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:
- 0 cases from 103 samples taken in the framework of the referral program by Personal Doctors and control of special teams through the Public Health Clinics.
- 0 cases from 1 sample taken as part of checks in closed facilities.
