A brake on the use of "rigged" vehicles attempts to put a law proposal submitted by EDEK MPs Kostis Efstathiou and Ilias Myrianthous for the amendment of the Motor Vehicles and Traffic Law, so as to establish a procedure in case a vehicle has undergone modifications and causes noise and noise pollution to be immobilized and transported to a place where it is returned to the condition it was in before the conversion will be arranged.

Specifically, the bill, which was submitted to the Plenum of the Parliament on Thursday and is expected to be discussed in the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Communications and Works, adds a special provision for the prohibition of driving a motor vehicle that has undergone conversion and causes noise pollution and disturbance.

The law proposal enables the members of the Police or other competent persons, according to the Law, to carry out inspections of vehicles, while at the same time, to call the owner, the driver or another person who is responsible for the vehicle that has undergone conversion, to immobilize it or to arrange to immobilize it and transfer it to a place at the suggestion of the Police in order to arrange its return to the previous condition.

At another point, it is indicated that in case the owner or the person responsible for the vehicle cannot be found, refuses or fails to immobilize it immediately and transfer it to a place indicated by the Police, it is transferred under the responsibility of the Police and the owner is required to pay the costs.

Stinging fines

It is worth noting that, according to the law proposal, he is found to be driving a vehicle that undergoes modifications, in case of conviction he is subject to a fine not exceeding €1000.

At the same time, any person who obstructs checks by members of the Police or other authorized persons, in case of conviction, is subject to a prison sentence of up to one year or to a fine not exceeding €3000.

Furthermore, according to the law proposal, a person who drives a vehicle that has been converted is guilty of an offence and if convicted, he is liable to a prison sentence not exceeding two years or to a fine not exceeding €6000.
