El Salvador is approaching the goal of the population's collective immunity against the coronavirus thanks to the progress of the immunization campaign that began in February in the Central American country, the representative of the Pan-American Health Organization, the directorate of the World Health Organization responsible for the Latin American and Caribbean region, stressed yesterday Friday.
Speaking to reporters during the reception of another batch of vaccines, Jovanni Escalante Guzmán, PAU's representative in El Salvador, noted that the agency is particularly "satisfied" because the country of some 6.5 million inhabitants "is close to achieving collective immunity."
Salvadoran Health Minister Francisco Alampi clarified that "over 75% of the population has received at least one first dose."
The Central American country had received 13.56 million doses of vaccines of various pharmaceutical companies for COVID-19 until yesterday.
Over 61% of El Salvador's citizens have been fully vaccinated.
According to data compiled by the website Our World In Data, the death toll of the novel coronavirus pandemic in the country exceeds 3,700 dead out of a total of more than 117,000 infections.
