THE EU AND THE GREEN LINE PROBLEM WITH MIGRANTS FROM TURKEY

Filenews 8 October 2021 - by Frixos Dalitis

Before the 27 EU Member States, the common problem is today being raised on the issue of the Green Line and the uncontrolled flow of migrants from Turkey to the Republic of Cyprus.

In a joint letter signed by the interior ministers of the five EU accession countries, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta and Spain, to the European Commissioner Ylva Johansson (revealed by "F") the issue of the Green Line is raised before the European Affairs and Justice Council. The five ministers stress in their priorities the following: "MED 5 consider that issues requiring legislative changes to be implemented within the EU should not wait for the outcome of the Pact negotiations. In this respect, tangible and quick results can be achieved. In parallel with the negotiations on the Pact, progress can (and should) be made, particularly in the areas of the external dimension, in strengthening returns and in managing the external borders. Similarly, the influx of migrants to the Republic of Cyprus through the Green Line should be managed accordingly, even though the Green Line is not a border.

Of particular importance is the fact that in the joint letter of MED 5 the "hole" of the Green Line is presented as a common EU problem and is set as part of the priorities for the negotiation of the Migration and Asylum Pact. Nikos Nouris had raised the issue urgently with Ms. Johansson during her visit to Cyprus last week, with the European Commissioner acknowledging the problem, while both highlighted the issue in interviews with "F" last Sunday.
