STRONG EARTHQUAKE NEAR CRETE FELT IN CYPRUS

 Filenews 19 October 2021

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale occurred early Tuesday morning off Karpathos, which was also felt in Cyprus, with the Geological Survey Department recording the earthquake on a scale of 5.9 degrees.

According to an announcement by the Geological Survey Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, today at 08:32 a strong earthquake of magnitude M = 6.1 on the Richter scale was recorded by the Department's seismological network.

The earthquake had its epicentre in the sea area 150 km southeast of Karpathos and 350 km west of Cyprus.

Despite the great distance of the outbreak from Cyprus, this earthquake was felt in a large part of the island mainly by residents of tall buildings. This earthquake is part of the seismic activity of the eastern part of the Greek Arc.

At the same time, foreign media broadcast that the earthquake was felt even in Egypt and Israel.

Lekkas: Confirms the wider stimulation in the area

The president of the OASP, Professor Efthimios Lekkas, spoke about an earthquake that confirms the wider arousal in the area, speaking to the in.gr, regarding the 6.1 Richter vibration off Karpathos, on Tuesday morning.

Despite the fact that he himself appeared reassuring about the continuation of the phenomenon, he observed that this stimulation can give events but in the sea space.

At the same time, as he was quick to point out, "no tsunami or strong aftershocks are expected."

Reassuring Houliaras

On the same wavelength, the seismologist and research director of geodynamics, Gerasimos Houliaras, appeared particularly reassuring in his first statements.

As he told ERT, the earthquake occurred far away from the mainland and estimated that "it is not an earthquake that will create problems".

Asked about whether it is an isolated incident, he noted that "one cannot say that it is. We may have aftershocks. The depth is huge, 60-70 kilometres. These earthquakes are deep earthquakes."

Concluding, he said that such earthquakes are beneficial as "they are too far away, it will not affect anyone and a huge amount of energy leaves".
