In recent days, the Cyprus Police Electronic Crime Subdivision has received numerous complaints about fake accounts on various social media, which falsely pretend that these are authentic businesses.
Fake accounts publish fake contests with the ultimate goal of deceiving unsuspecting victims – social media users in order to place their personal – bank details on data interception websites.
In other cases, the victim is falsely informed by the fake account that he is the lucky one of the original competition organized by the company and is asked to place his mobile phone number on a misleading website, resulting in the victim shouldering unwanted charges on his mobile phone bill.
The public is asked to be particularly careful in the websites that place their personal and banking data and to confirm the authenticity of the accounts of the businesses that communicate with them.
