EU-QATAR LANDMARK AGREEMENT ON AIR TRANSPORT

 Filenews 18 October 2021

A comprehensive air transport agreement, which upgrades the rules and standards for flights between Qatar and the EU, was signed today by both parties.

The agreement is a new global point of reference, committing both sides to respect the rules of fair competition, while including social and environmental protection.

The signature implies new opportunities for consumers, airlines and airports in Qatar and the EU.

"Qatar is an increasingly important partner of the EU in the field of aviation. With 6.3 million passengers travelling between the EU and Qatar in 2019, Qatar was the 15th largest market outside the EU that year. Therefore, ensuring open and fair competition for air services between the EU and Qatar is vital as regards also the routes between the EU and Asia," reads a statement.

Commissioner for Mobility and Transport Adina Vagean said: "This agreement, which is the first agreement between the EU and the Gulf region, is a global benchmark for forward-made air transport agreements. It is proof of our shared commitment to economically, socially and environmentally sustainable air transport, based on a modern framework covering fair competition and closer cooperation on social and environmental issues. This agreement will offer new opportunities, more choice and higher standards for passengers, the aviation industry and workers in this sector."
