MOVES TO ENCIRCLE CYPRUS - TURKISH ACTIONS IN THE EEZ

Filenews 24 October 2021 - by Kostas Venizelos

The occupying Turkey is making moves to encircle Cyprus, in an effort to promote its expansionist plans, primarily at sea. The actions are based on the narrative of the "Blue Homeland" and cover the areas north, south and west of Cyprus, putting the island under siege and constant pressure.

Turkish plans, despite the reactions of third parties, which are low-key, are not affected and move in two fields. On the ground and the sea. Attention is focused on the Cyprus EEZ and the enclosed area of occupied Famagusta. The information says that the Turks seem not to be rushing before anyone and will proceed with his tactics step by step for the colonization of Famagusta. The limited work currently being done, which concerns 3.5 % of the enclave, is part of the puzzle and the follow-up will be announced after the opening of this area.

As far as the EEZ is concerned, the surveys south of Cyprus will be carried out in parallel with those of Exxon Mobil, at least, while it is not clear how they will react when - in early 2022 - the ENI-TOTAL consortium will proceed with drilling, in the sea parcel 6. Oruc Reis was sent north of Cyprus to the area "defined by the Continental Shelf Agreement we signed with the ''TRNC'' in 2011 and whose borders were notified to the UN on March 18, 2020," Turkey's defence ministry said. Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa Seismic Research Fatih, Kanuni Drilling and the ship Denar-2 search the Black Sea. Consequently, the fleet of the Turkish Petroleum Corporation and the drillers is on full alert, although there will be more moves.

It is obvious that Ankara will not enter into discussions, which will affect the implementation of its strategic plans. Plans, which are timeless, concern the state and not only the present government, but the period we are going through may also be linked to the maintenance of the current regime in power.

In the diplomatic field, the gap between process and initiatives on the Cyprus issue leaves the British to move on their own. Especially when the United Nations Secretariat seems to have frozen the proceedings. The envoy of the English Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responsible for Cyprus, Ajay Sharma, who made a new visit to Cyprus, crossed for the first time the threshold of the presidential office together with the ambassador here, Steven Lilly. He made a series of other contacts on both sides of the Attila line and met political leaders. The British narrative is that there is an urgent need for moves to resume talks on the Cyprus issue, putting forward the view that "the game will end" if further steps are taken in Famagusta. The information says that London describes the situation in Turkey that the regime is almost in collapse and this makes - as they claim - Erdogan very dangerous. Employing the "bogeyman" of a hot episode, as a result of the pressure that Erdogan is under (economy, opinion polls), their next reference is that flexibility should be shown by Nicosia and the concerns of the Turkish Cypriot side should be taken into account. What are they? Those put forward by the occupying leader, Ersin Tatar, who is considered to represent the majority that has chosen him! It emerges from the contacts in Nicosia that London considers that the most important thing is to start the process and that through negotiations the discussions can be led to what is intended. More or less, it is noted that after the demands of occupying Turkey for sovereign equality and equal international status will be met to some extent, through an evolutionary course the discussions will end up in a federation. At the same time, taking advantage of what is reported from Nicosia to a decentralized federation, they indirectly refer to two internal sovereignties and an external one, which will concern the representation of the country.

At the same time, although they know the fate of their proposal, they are still maintaining the formula according to which to consider the possibility of an exchange of letters from Anastasiades and Tatar, in which their intentions are recorded with the aim of motivating one side to motivate the other to return to the negotiations. In the case of the Greek Cypriot side, it will be able to explain, as indicated, the "inherent rights" of the Turkish Cypriots, which will refer to the issues of the sovereignty of the "co-founders" of the Republic of Cyprus. The idea of the letters was rejected by both sides.

However, the information says that even in the international field the initiatives and ideas of Forein Ofis do not seem to "walk". Even the Germans, who have always believed that London has the Cyprus patent, do not seem to be in the mood to listen to ... their imaginative ideas.

It is noted that the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, will be in London tomorrow, Monday, and the Cyprus issue will be on the agenda.

CONTROL OF THE AREA WITH PORT MODEL

The recent decision to grant an area to Karpasia by the EBKAF to the so-called security forces of the pseudo-state is also included in the imposition of faits accomplis on the ground. This is a move linked to the control of the sea area, which the "forces" of the Turkish Cypriots will undertake to exercise instead of the occupying army. As has already been pointed out, this is a game, linked to the narrative of the two states. Turkey has ceded to the pseudo-state vessels to control the area, on the standards of a port police.

The S.A. was informed about projects in Famagusta

The United Nations Security Council has been informed in writing by the Republic of Cyprus of the new illegal works of the occupying force in the enclosed area of Famagusta. The Permanent Representative of Cyprus at the UN headquarters in New York, Ambassador Andreas Hadjichrysanthou, sent a letter to the members of the Security Council informing about the commencement of work by the occupying regime in that area of the enclave, which covers 3.5% of its total. The briefing is part of what was decided by the S.A., namely that it will be kept informed about what is happening in the enclosed area of the occupied city. And that is what Nicosia is doing with the letter of its ambassador in New York.

But why was this area chosen by the Turks? It is noted in this regard that there is a "decision" of the "Famagusta District Court" that 95% of the enclosed area belongs to the EBKAF. A decision which has nothing to do with the facts. But that's another story. At 3.5%, as has been mentioned, no properties of EBKAF are found and for obvious reasons priority was given. To mislead the refugees and bring them before the so-called compensation committee.
