CORONAVIRUS - 644 DEATHS SINCE THE START OF THE PANDEMIC

There were 644 deaths of people diagnosed with coronavirus from March 2020 to October 13.

Specifically, according to the latest data from the national report of the Ministry of Health, 64% concern men (n = 410 deaths) and the remaining 36% concern women (n = 234 deaths).

Of the 644 deaths, 559 (87%) had an underlying cause of COVID-19.63% of the total number of deaths with the underlying cause of COVID-19 is for men (n=354 deaths) and the remaining 37% are women (n=205 deaths).

50% of the total number of deaths of people diagnosed with COVID-19 involve people aged 69-85, with a median age of death of 78 years.

The total number of deaths of people diagnosed with COVID-19, during the month of August 2021 (n=93), exceeded the number of deaths of December 2020 (n=86) and January 2021 (n=86). Since the beginning of the pandemic, the rate for the three months with the highest numbers has reached 41% of the total number of deaths. It is followed by April 2021 with 10% (n=66), May 2021 with 9% (n=58) and July with 7% (n=46).

The highest percentage of deaths of people who are positive with COVID-19, with covid-19 as the underlying cause of death, concerns people with permanent residence in the Limassol District (n=204, 36%). They are followed by Nicosia District (n=175, 31%), Larnaca District (n=105, 19%), Pafos District (n=37, 7%), Famagusta District (n=30,5%), 6 deaths have an Undefined Permanent Residence District (1%) and 2 deaths concern residents abroad.

Limassol has the highest mortality rate per 100000 population (82.0 deaths per 100000 population). It is followed by Larnaca with 69.6 deaths, Famagusta with 61.3 deaths, Nicosia with 50.6 deaths and finally Paphos with 39.4 deaths per 100000 population.

The objective of the EuroMOMO (European excess mortality monitoring) network is to operate coordinated early monitoring of mortality and analyses in as many European countries as possible, using a standardised approach, to ensure that data are comparable between countries, in times of pandemic and other infections that have an impact on public health e.g. influenza pandemic; heat waves. Cyprus has been a member of the EuroMOMO network since 28/10/2020. The network brings together 29 countries. For the week 40/2021, Cyprus does not have an excessive mortality rate.
