PAPHOS - UNREST IN THE SHOPPING CENTRE DUE TO THE ABOLITION OF PARKING SPACES

Filenews 28 September 2021 - by Dora Christodoulou

Strong protests have been recorded since yesterday in the commercial centre of Paphos, due, as the shopkeepers of the area claim, to the decision of the Municipality to abolish parking spaces in front of their shops.

The owners of the commercial shops of the area argue that the abolition of these positions is done with the aim of the municipal authority to offer more useful space to the recreation centres that are active after the redevelopment in the area. They complain that the Municipality systematically favours recreation centres, making them more dominant of sidewalks and open public spaces, while shops are vegetating because of the regime that is being consolidated in the shopping centre.

The shopkeepers today expressed a strong reaction and indignation about this situation, while a police force rushed to the place for any eventuality.

Their presence in today's protests of the shopkeepers was given by the MP of Pafos of DIKO, Chrysanthos Savvidis and members of the Pafos Municipal Council.
