HOSTEL TO BE CREATED FOR PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS

 Filenews 20 September 2021

With the aim of providing a humanitarian environment to people suffering from chronic mental health problems and relieving congestion on the Athalassa Hospital, the Mental Health Services of the CySEC are proceeding with the creation of a Protected Hostel.

According to an announcement, the hostel, with a capacity of 11 beds, will be housed in the building of the former Latsia Health Center and will accommodate patients with chronic mental health problems in a stable condition, who are hospitalized at the Athalassa Hospital do not present a risk and who could be restored to the community.

These are, it is noted, people with chronic mental health problems who need deinstitutionalization and integration into the community in protected or semi-protected hostels. These people have been assessed as no longer in need of compulsory hospitalization at Athalassa Hospital, but unfortunately there is no family or community system to take them over.

As mentioned, the hostel complies with all the specifications required for the operation of such premises. As in Athalassa Hospital, specialized mental health nursing staff will staff the facilities of the hostel on a 24-hour basis, 7 days a week.

The design includes dense tree planting around the guesthouse and a general upgrade and improvement of the facades of the building and the surrounding area.

It is noted that the promotion of this project is carried out with the support of the Municipality of Latsia and in cooperation with the Department of Town Planning and Housing and is part of a series of actions of the CySEC for the continuous improvement of the infrastructure and the mental health services provided to those in need.
