A new case of internet fraud and the extortion of money with false representations is being investigated by the Police, following a complaint received by a 40-year-old resident of Limassol.
According to the complainant, in early August 2021, he spotted on a vehicle buying and selling website, a specific car, which was available for sale, for the sum of 4,995 English pounds. The 40-year-old, after contacting the seller of the vehicle by telephone, agreed with him on the purchase and sale of the vehicle and to this end, he sent the above amount of money to a bank account indicated by the seller.
As agreed, by August 26th, the vehicle would be delivered by the seller to a transport company in order to arrange for its transportation in Cyprus. However, this did not happen, while the seller ceased to have any communication with the complainant.
The Financial Crime Investigation Office of the I.E.I.A. of Limassol is investigating the case.
On the occasion of this incident, the Police advises once again the public to be particularly careful in their transactions and purchases via the Internet. In particular, the public is urged to avoid buying and selling products from controversial sources of sale, as well as paying any amount to the seller before receiving the products.
