AUGUST 2021 - THE WARMEST MONTH ON RECORD FOR CYPRUS

The warmest month for Cyprus since temperatures were recorded was this August.

Specifically, according to an announcement transmitted by the GHO, during the month of August 2021, there were high maximum temperatures in several areas in Cyprus. Also, the incidence of heatwave conditions (i.e. temperatures above 40°C) was quite high.

The average daily maximum temperature for August 2021 as calculated for the Athalassa station was 39.8°C, which ranks August 2021 as the warmest month for Cyprus since temperatures were recorded. The previous warmest month was last July with an average daily maximum temperature of 39.7°C, again at Athalassa station.

The values for the average daily maximum temperature of August in Athalassa from 1983 to 2017, i.e. for 34 years, ranged between 34.5°C and 37.7°C, while from 2018 until today, 2021, the average daily maximum temperature of August in Athalassa steadily rose from 38.5°C in 2018 to 39.8°C in 2021.

The normal value of the average daily maximum temperature for the thirty years 1981-2010 for the month of August is 37.0°C. Therefore there is an increase of the average daily maximum temperature, by 2.8°C degrees for the month of August 2021 at the station of Athalassa, which is considered quite significant.

The daily maximum temperature, as recorded at the Athalassa station on August 4, 2021, was 44.3°C, which is the third highest since 1983 for the month of August (with first highest 45.6°C in 2010 and second in 44.5°C in 2020).
