PERMITTED ANIMALS

The Veterinary Services of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment recall, in their announcement, the Regulations regulating the issues of construction and operation of animal sales premises, as well as the issues of keeping animals, through the establishment of a list of the species / categories of animals that are allowed to be held and sold.

"The Protection and Welfare of Animals (Possession and Sale of Animals) Regulations of 2021" (P.I.C. 95/2021) were published on 04/03/2021 in the Official Gazette of the Republic. According to the Regulations, which fall under the Integrated Framework for the Protection and Welfare of Animals from the entry into force of the Regulations (04/03/2021), no person is allowed to possess for any purpose, or to reproduce, or to hatch, or to import from a third country, or to move from another Member State, or to sell, or for the purpose of sale to advertise or offer or exhibit animals or hatching eggs, which do not belong to the animals that are allowed to be held as defined in Annex I of the Regulations. Below is a relevant table with the species / categories of animals.

Natural persons who for a private non-profit purpose own animals (as pets), which do not belong to the animals that are allowed to be held, must within six months from the date of entry into force of the Regulations, i.e. until 05/09/2021, inform the Veterinary Services and are entitled to continue to hold them until the end of their lives, in accordance with conditions set by the Veterinary Services. For this purpose, a relevant form (EIZZ05 form) must be completed and submitted to the local District Veterinary Offices. The form can be submitted either by e-mail after scanning, or by fax or by hand.

The animals allowed to be possessed are: dog, cat, ferret, rabbit, rodents, fish, amphibians excluding poisonous species, reptiles excluding species of the boidae and pythonidae families, species of the order Crocodylia and poisonous species, invertebrates excluding the poisonous species of spiders and scorpions.

The following animals are regulated and/or prohibited by the relevant local authorities and other authorities: pig, sheep, goat, cattle (European and Indian vuss), horse, donkey, mule and ginnos, birds.
