NEW COASTAL PATH FOR PEYIA

Cyprus Mail 21 August 2021 - by Bejay Browne

The creation of a new coastal path is due to get underway in Peyia in the coming weeks,  Mayor Marinos Lambrou has said.

“The winning tender will be announced at the end of the month and then work is expected to get underway mid-September,” Lambrou said.

The entire project will be 14km-long, starting at the ‘entrance’ to Peyia and culminating at Saint George’s harbour. It will be completed in two phases, the first phase will be 2km-long and cost around €2.5 million, he said.

“The first phase is not just the pathway, it also includes the construction of an amphitheatre, an ‘open’ (outdoor) gym, a basketball court, a kiosk and a playground for children,” he said.

There will also be new services included in the project, such as toilets and showers, he added

“This is a very important project that will upgrade Peyia. It is expected to take around 18 months.”

In addition, Peyia municipality is planning on creating a new beach to run the length of the coast in front of the Ascos Hotel, which will take a couple of years to come to fruition.

“We have planned for this already and it will start at the end of 2022. We are also making serious moves to protect the coastline from erosion not only for beach goers but also to protect the houses there too,” he said.

Other Peyia projects include a basketball and volleyball court and a five-a-side football pitch, all close to the stadium at a cost of €80,000 each.

“They are almost finished,” he said.

In addition, millions are being spent on asphalting the roads of Peyia both inside the village and those leading to it, he concluded.
