ECOLOGISTS - ENVIRONMENTAL CRIME IN PAFOS DISTRICT

 Filenews 31 August 2021

A complaint about environmental crime, noted in a primary school in the Pafos district, was made by the Movement of Ecologists.

As stated in a relevant announcement by the Movement of Ecologists: "another environmental crime is taking place in the district of Pafos, this time in an elementary school. Specifically, the Mayor of Pafos, according to a complaint by the Director of the Primary School that took place in the incident, with the "this is how I want" demolished large, tall trees without any permission and in an area that does not have jurisdiction over the Town Hall. The cutting of the trees was done under the unacceptable pretext that "the sidewalks are dirty".

He goes on to state that "as a Movement of Ecologists – Citizens' Cooperation, we express our strong dissatisfaction with the anti-environmental and arbitrary action of the Mayor. We must all finally realise that the trees provide us with oxygen and are not destined for cutting off. These trees shaded the classrooms of the school, so the students did not suffer from the particularly high temperatures of the summer."

"We would like to remind you that this is not the first time that the Mayor has expressed in this way his anti-environmental stance, as well as before that a similar incident of cutting off healthy trees had occurred in the 1st Lyceum of Pafos and again without a permit", he points out below.

Finally, he immediately called on the Department of Forests and the competent bodies to take the necessary actions to punish illegal intervention in the school's environment.
