The Ministry of Health announces that today, August 16, 2021, 5 people have died due to coronavirus, while 381 are the new cases of the disease. At the same time, 234 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 85 are in serious condition.
Specifically:
- Five people have died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 461.
- 234 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 85 are in serious condition. 81.2% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
- 14 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases), continue to be hospitalized intubated due to COVID in Intensive Care Units.
- A total of 44,374 tests have been performed to detect the disease using the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.
- 381 (positivity rate: 0.86%) new cases of COVID-19 were identified by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 109,253.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:
The five people who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19, concern:
- A woman, aged 79, who ended up on August 6th at Paphos General Hospital.
- A woman, aged 87, who ended up on August 13th at Larnaka General Hospital.
- Woman, aged 87, who ended up on August 15th at Nicosia General Hospital.
- A man, aged 49, who ended up on August 15th in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.
- A woman, aged 70, who ended up today at Nicosia General Hospital.
Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 461, of which:
- 298 men (65%), and
- 163 women (35%).
The average age of those voted by the disease is 77 years.
B. Hospitalized:
In total, 234 covid-19 patients are hospitalized in the hospitals of the CySEC, of which 85 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.

C. Positive cases of COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):
Of the 44,374 diagnoses performed today, 5,980 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 38,394 by the antigen rapid test method, 381 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting as follows:
- 18 cases from 161 samples taken through the process of contact tracing of already confirmed cases.
- 9 cases from 3,632 samples taken in the context of passenger screening at Larnaka and Paphos Airports.
- 40 cases from 1,810 samples taken through private initiative.
- 16 cases from 240 samples taken from the Microbiology Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
- 171 cases from 20,672 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
- 127 cases from 17,722 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method through the Ministry of Health's programme.
In addition, the following tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:
- 137 samples taken in the framework of the referral program by Personal Physicians and control of special teams through the Public Health Clinics.
