THE DESCENT OF THE BRITISH BEGINS!

 Filenews 20 July 2021

A significant increase in flights to and from the United Kingdom, to and from Cyprus airports, has been observed in recent times, Maria Kouroupi, Senior Director of Aviation Development, Marketing and Communication at Hermes Airports, told the CYPE.

She added that "following the UK Government's decision to abolish quarantine for vaccinated passengers returning from orange-class countries such as Cyprus, we are seeing a significant increase in flights to and from the UK."

She added that "last week we had 36 flights to Britain and by the end of July the flights will reach almost 85 a week. Trying to make a comparison with 2019, the best year in terms of passenger traffic at Larnaca and Paphos airports, in the corresponding period of 2019 we had 250 flights per week".

In response to a question, Maria Kouroupi said that "we have a long way to go, but it is certainly a much better picture and figures than it was last year, the first year of the coronavirus pandemic. However, despite the increase in flights, the situation remains very fluid, as Europe is going through a fourth wave of the pandemic and given that Cyprus is currently in the deep red of the ECDC map, there is uncertainty and there may be changes or cancellations."

Maria added that 'the existing six airlines operate flights to and from Larnaca and Paphos airports at 18 UK airports, namely Belfast, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Doncaster, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool, Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Luton and Manchester Newcastle'.
