PAPHOS CULTURAL FOUNDATION SHOULD BE SET UP TODAY

Filenews 12 July 2021 - by Dora Christodoulou

Today, with the exception of a last-minute event, the Paphos Municipal Council is expected to be able to formalise the establishment and opening of the Cultural Foundation. The Foundation will take over the city's cultural policy and infrastructure management, as well as the huge project left as a dowry in the city in "Paphos 2017".

On the grounds of the tension prevailing in the political scene and the election that follows in the Local Government, a portion of the Municipal Council appeared at the previous plenary session on 24 June negative to proceed at this time with the choice of the seven-member Board of Directors of the new organization, resulting in the Municipal Council of Paphos finally deciding to postpone the process until today. Thus, unless again there is a negative decision, the president and the six-member board of the new organization are expected to be appointed tonight. Until recently, 34 citizens of Paphos have already formally expressed their interest in participating in the Cultural Foundation.

The mayor of Paphos, Phaedon Phaedon, expressed his surprise at the attitude of the portion of the Municipal Council that did not want the process to be completed, noting that these same members were highly critical because the establishment of the body was delayed. "There is no excuse for postponement," the mayor argued, and attributed this development to micro-partisanship.

This position of the mayor of Paphos was rejected by the head of the municipal group of ACPL in the Municipality of Paphos, Costas Nextros, pointing out that the ACPL has no expediency and there is no problem with the whole process being done in public. He stressed, however, that his party's position is that this period of polarization does not lend itself to such serious decisions.
