Filenews 2 June 2021
The Ministry of Health informs that, according to information received from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), in specialized tests carried out on 170 virus-positive samples, the following mutations were detected:
- In 166 samples the English strain was identified (B.1.1.7)
- In 2 samples the Indian strain was identified (B.1.617.2)
- In 2 samples, strain C.36 was detected, which is not a variant of concern
The samples examined relate to positive incidents detected from 30 April to 21 May. 91 people have permanent residence in Nicosia Province, 46 people in Limassol Province, 8 people in Paphos Province, 16 people in Larnaca Province and 9 people in Famagusta Province.
It is recalled that, despite the strict measures applied at Larnaca and Paphos Airports and the checks carried out on passengers travelling to Cyprus, the likelihood of new virus mutations entering the country remains increased. Scientifically it has been shown that vaccination of a high percentage of the population and faithful adherence to individual protection measures is the strongest weapon to limit the spread of the virus and stop the emergence of new more contagious strains.
