PAPHOS CAROB MILLS - ARSON ACCELERATES RECOVERY PLANS

Filenews 21 May 2021 - by Dora Christodoulou

The public commitment of the President of the Republic at the opening ceremony of the Pafos Innovation Institute on 30 October to the transfer of the historical Carobmills of Paphos to the municipal authority has already taken shape. The transfer from the state to the municipal authority took place as a first stage.  The Municipality of Paphos then proceeded to clean up the historic buildings as a second step and now the citizens of Paphos are waiting for the third and most important step, which will be the exact form of their exploitation.

Revealed information to "F" indicates that the study and the final decisions of the Municipality of Paphos on this subject are essentially formulated and soon, after the final "tweaks" in the design, will be announced to the local community. The same information indicates that, as was made clear from the outset by the Mayor of Paphos, the use of the historical site will not have anything to do with the usual conversions in recent years to multi-cultural spaces.

The procedures have been initiated in recent times at a very rapid pace, since at the end of last November President Anastasiades' commitment that the Council of Ministers will decide to grant the historical space for Paphos, in order to benefit from the appropriate exploitation by the municipal authority, was implemented. Immediately, following this positive development, the Municipality of Paphos announced an invitation of interest for the removal of metal and other structures from the building complex of Charoymyla, located on Apostolos Pavlos Avenue, a process that was also implemented quickly.

The decisive step is now expected to be known to civil society as to the final exploitation and promotion of the space, which will not be another multi-cultural space, since the city now has the capacity of such spaces.

It is worth noting that the further hastening of any decisions caused by the new, recent large fire that broke out in the building complex by anti-social activities of young people and which made it clear that the historical site cannot remain in the state of inertia of recent years.
