NEW AIRPORT IN THE OCCUPIED AREA TO BE CALLED 'FAZIL KUTSUK'

 Filenews 4 May 2021

The new airport built in the occupied territories in the same location as the illegally operated airport in Tybu (Erjan),  will be called Fazil Kuchuk as announced by T/C leader Ersin Tatar.

Mr Tatar said he had discussed this issue with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, and that this idea satisfied the Turkish authorities. He added that Erdogan's name is thought to be given to the military airport .

He noted that the naming of the new airport as Fazil Kuchuk would send an important message to the international community. He said the T/Cs "own a state with sovereignty because of the flame lit by Kuchuk", arguing that a solution that provides for the cooperation of two sovereign states can have significant success in the region.

He also said that "the sovereignty of the Turkish Cypriots is a historical right that does not need to be discussed".

He said the Turkish side took a historic step at the informal conference in Geneva and that the federation poses risks to Turkish Cypriots. "The game changed in Geneva," he said.

Returning to President Anastasiades' Easter message, he said it was inappropriate that he referred to the T/Cs as citizens of the Republic of Cyprus.
