A large fire broke out in the early hours of Tuesday at the Paphos landfill, in Marathounta, "choking" in smoke a huge area stretching from the eastern semi-mountainous Paphos to the northern suburbs of the city of Paphos to Tsada and Tala.
The fire broke out of unknown cause so far and the Fire Department was immediately mobilized with two fire trucks, while crews with special vehicles placed volumes of soil in order to stop its spread.
It is the umpteenth time that a fire has broken out in the area, especially during the evening hours, the complete extinguishment of which will take days due to the highly flammable materials and their huge volume. The fumes have created a stuffy atmosphere on the part of the Paphos-Limassol highway from Agia Marinauda to the exit of Koukia, while many communities, part of the Municipalities of Geroskipou and Paphos, as well as areas within kilometers of the fire outbreak, have been affected.
The cause of the fire will be investigated after it has been completely extinguished.
