ELEVEN DRIVERS POSITIVE FOR DRUG DRIVING TEST IN 13 DAYS

 Filenews 8 May 2021

Eleven vehicle drivers have been positive for a preliminary mine test since April 28, according to a police statement.

Three of the eleven drivers who were positive for a preliminary drug test were also found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. One of the three drivers, a 32-year-old motorcyclist, underwent an alcohol test with a reading of 26μg% instead of up to 9μg% which is the maximum allowed for motorcycle drivers.

Two other drivers, aged 25 and 27, were subjected to alcohol test with readings of 93μg% and 55μg% respectively, instead of up to 22μg% which is the permitted limit, they were also driving a car without being covered by an insurance certificate, as was also found during the check submitted.

Without an insurance certificate, five of the 11 drivers who were positive for a preliminary drug test were found to be moving. One of them, aged 18, was driving a car without being accompanied by a licensed driver, while a second driver, aged 36, was driving a car without holding a driving licence after his student licence had expired. A third driver, aged 51, was riding a motorcycle, despite the fact that, by a court order last February, at the hearing of a previous drug-fuelled driving case, he had been denied a driving licence for a period of nine months until next November.

Of the eleven drug-driving cases that have arisen in the last ten days, five have occurred in Paphos province, four in Limassol province and one in Larnaca province and one in Famagusta province.

The Cyprus Police, "places particular emphasis on this phenomenon and with daily checks and campaigns, and constant information, focuses its efforts to address the problem, with the aim of preventing serious and fatal road collisions, cultivating road awareness and increasing the sense of safety on the road network", the communication finally states.
