US STUDYING JOHNSON & JOHNSON VACCINE TO SEE IF IT HAS SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS

 Filenews 20 April 2021

US health authorities are studying available data on cases of potential serious side effects among people who received Johnson & Johnson's vaccine for the new coronavirus, in addition to those that have already led to the suspension of its use, Rochelle Walinski, director of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said yesterday.

Last week, US supervisors called for the suspension of the administration of J&J's product due to serious cases of blood clots in six women under the age of 50, who were among the 7 million people who have received the vaccine, given in one dose.

"We are encouraged that there have not been a large number of cases, but we are looking at it, we are studying (the reports) that we have," Ms Walinski said during a press conference yesterday.

The Federal Medicines Agency (FDA) monitors the US government's database of additional incidents of side effects, he added.

Rochelle Walinski gave no details about the nature of the other side effects, other than blood clots.

The CDC's advisory committee will meet Friday to examine data on possible serious side effects of J&J's product and to give an opinion on whether its exploitation should continue as part of the immunisation campaign. Experts expect it to start again, but once there are clear guidelines for diagnosing and treating thrombosis, a potential side effect.

The increase in dose production of J&J vaccine may be slower than originally planned. The FDA last month postponed the licensing of a plant that will produce large amounts of doses of the product, following errors that resulted in millions of doses being destroyed.

The White House adviser on tackling the pandemic of the new crown Andy Slavit assured Americans yesterday that the country has plenty of vaccines and that immunization "has never been easier" for them. About three million doses of Pfizer Inc/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines are administered daily to citizens (both administered in two doses).

Governments of rich countries are considering procuring Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines to help keep the timeline of their immunization campaigns amid concerns about the side effects of J&J and AstraZeneca.

Some EUR 260 million has been distributed in the United States. doses of vaccines, of which some 210 million are have already been granted, according to CDC data through Sunday.

According to the director of the CDC, of the 84 million people who have been in the country since 2010, 100,000 people have been in the united States. people who have been fully immune in the US, fewer than 6,000 showed symptoms of COVID-19 two weeks or more after receiving their second dose. Of these, nearly 400 were admitted to a hospital and about 75 died, according to CDC data. However, some of the hospital admissions and some of the deaths were not due to COVID-19.

"This means something truly important. These vaccines are effective," according to Ms. Walinski.
