"THE INCIDENT INVOLVING THE TRANSPORT OF A DOG WILL BE INVESTIGATED''

 Filenews 28 April 2021

The assurance that the Municipality of Ayia Napa will examine the incident, which occurred as part of an effort to transport a dog to an animal shelter by officials of the Municipality and will take all necessary measures that may result from an investigation requested, was given by Mayor Christos Zannetou.

In a statement, the Mayor of Ayia Napa refers "to the incident that occurred today as part of an attempt to transport a dog to an animal shelter by officials of the Municipality of Ayia Napa in the Area of Kavo Greco. There seems to be evidence that excessive violence has occurred during the dog transport process" while at the same time "there is information that the dog has long roamed the area and the Municipality of Ayia Napa received complaints from various people walking or holidaying in the area that there was a risk of attack".

After stating that "it is not clear whether the dog became aggressive during its transport or whether the intended method permitted by law was used" in the notice it is noted that the Mayor of Ayia Napa asked "the Head of the Department to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident. The clear instructions that the officials of the Municipality have are to respect the animals and always act with respect to them and in compliance with the legislation".

The notice notes that "the dog was taken to the shelter" which was personally visited by the Mayor of Ayia Napa and found that "he does not show any injuries. At the same time, a veterinarian has been notified to examine him, and the usual procedure for speying and adopting the animal will be followed."

Christos Zannetou assures that "the Municipality of Ayia Napa has always implemented the relevant legislation of the Dog Law while having and maintaining the municipal shelter, which is in good condition and is inspected annually by the Veterinary Services of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment".

And the article from late 27 April, also in Filenews:

Intense reactions provoked images of the collection and transport of a stray dog in the Kavo Greco area of Ayia Napa by officials of the local authority, posted on social media.

A statement on the matter was issued by the Animal Party stating that the video shows "an employee of the Municipality of Ayia Napa literally dragging" a dog he conceived using the lasso method and other employees shouting that he would go for euthanasia to "learn", "punish" etc.":

These are methods of the past and it does not honour anyone to behave and treat animals like this and in this case a stray abandoned animal. It is a disgrace and a disgrace to the Municipality of Ayia Napa who had shown up to date its animal welfare action.

The Cyprus Animal Party condemns such behaviour wherever it comes from and calls for an immediate investigation by the police into the two laws 46(I)1994 and 182(I)2002 on welfare and dog laws, on barbaric and criminal behaviour and the vile way in which officials of the Municipality of Ayia Napa used to arrest the innocent animal. We inform that the Party has spoken with the Mayor of Ayia Napa who has already ordered an investigation into the incident and informed us that the dog will be examined by a veterinarian and will take over the dog personally by the Mayor.

After investigating the incident, the videos speak with true images and demonstrate this obscene behavior and brutality by the employees of the Municipality of Ayia Napa, to be arrested immediately and brought to justice for the performance of the charges appropriate to them for these cowardly acts.

The Cyprus Animal Party with the members of the Famagusta Provincial Committee and our prospective Deputies are closely monitoring the case and are in constant communication with the above-mentioned officials and will await from the police the outcome of the investigation into this case, explanations from the veterinary services of how they finally perceive the procedures for the capture of these animals and from the Municipality of Ayia Napa on how the officials of the Municipality finally operated against or if such abhorrent procedures or protocols are in place and applied, or if officials do as they wish.

We will not let this case go soft and please again and we urge all citizens to make complaints and testimonies to bring these cases to justice for those who do not have a voice.
