Six out of 10 deaths during the pandemic occurred in 2021, while April is the third month in a row of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
According to ministry of health data, as of April 28, 2021, 372 deaths of people diagnosed with COVID-19 have been reported. 66% are for men (n=246 deaths) and the remaining 34% for women (n=126 deaths). Of the 372 deaths, 308 (83%), had an underlying cause of COVID-19. 55% of the total number of deaths is for people aged 75-89. The objective of the EuroMOMO network (European monitoring of excess mortality) is to operate coordinated early monitoring of mortality and analyses in as many European countries as possible, using a standardised approach to ensure that data are comparable between countries, in times of pandemics and other infections that have an impact on public health e.g. influenza pandemic, heat waves. Cyprus has been a member of the EuroMOMO network since 28/10/2020. 26 countries participate in the network. For Cyprus there is no excess mortality during the pandemic period (up to the 16th week of analysis of mortality data for the year 2021).
