 Filenews 8 April 2021

An increase in food prices and decreases in the prices of: clothing and footwear, air tickets, fuel and electricity and the internet, the Statistical Office found in a survey a year after the occurrence of the crown in our country.

The Statistical Office shall publish an infographic showing the percentage change in the prices of important categories of goods and services for three different periods of time compared to the corresponding periods of the previous year.

The time periods of the comparisons were established to show the impact of the prohibition measures in force at times, in order to deal with the negative effects of the occurrence of COVID-19 coronavirus as follows: March-May 2020 (first period), June-November 2020 (second period) and December 2020-February 2021 (third period).

The main conclusions are summarised as follows:

  • In the categories Food (excluding fresh fruit and vegetables) and Fast Food there was a relative increase in prices during the first comparison period, and then prices stabilised.
  • Prices in the Clothing and Footwear category in the first period decreased compared to last year's (physical premises were closed while electronic or telephone orders could be placed). During the second and third comparison periods prices recovered.
  • In the Airfare category there was a decrease in prices during the first two periods while in the third period prices increased.
  • Fuel and Electricity prices decreased in all three periods (the electricity calculation included the 10% reduction in the price of electricity implemented by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus for the period April-September 2020).
  • In the category Internet access (domestic use) there was a decrease in prices, while at the same time upgrading the speeds of internet access.
