IOANNOU'S DISSATISFACTION WITH MEMBER STATES' PRACTICE REGARDING ASTRAZENECA

 Filenews 7 April 2021

The Minister of Health participated tonight in a teleconference with his counterparts Ministers of the EU Member States, during which the vaccination coverage of European citizens and the AstraZeneca vaccine were discussed, following today's opinion of the EMA.

In his speech, Mr Ioannou expressed strong dissatisfaction with the practice of many European states in restricting administering the AstraZeneca vaccine, a practice which is not based on purely scientific criteria. The Minister touched on the fact that the constant changes in the attitude of some States and the inconsistency they show in the implementation of decisions taken unanimously by the EMA on the authorisation of vaccines are confusing and upsetting to citizens not only at national level but also in the other States.

As a result of this inconsistency, citizens appear hesitant about the vaccine, do not respond to the call for vaccination and that the implementation of national vaccination programmes is delayed. It pointed out that, if these delays continue, the target of vaccinating a sufficient proportion of populations within the first half of the year will not be met, and therefore States will remain paralysed by the strict restrictive measures that will continue to apply.
