DRUNK AND UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS - 12 DRIVERS CAUGHT IN LAST TWO WEEKS

A total of 12 cases of drug driving under investigation have emerged following checks carried out by the police over the past two weeks. During traffic checks between 10 April and 10 April, twelve vehicle drivers have been positive for a preliminary drug test.

One of the drivers, a young man aged 17, was driving a car on a road in Nicosia, without holding a driving licence and without being covered by an insurance certificate, while driving dangerously, tried to escape control.

Three other vehicle drivers, in addition to the positive preliminary drug, were found to be driving under the influence of alcohol, while one of them, a 28-year-old man, on a road in Nicosia province, was also involved in a traffic accident. The indication in alcottest submitted was 69μg% instead of up to 22μg%, which is the permitted limit.

The second driver, a 33-year-old man, was driving a car in an area of Paphos and the indication in an alcottest submitted was 48μg% instead of up to 22μg%, while the third driver, a young man aged 19, was driving a car on a road in Famagusta area, where he was stopped and subjected to an alcotest with an indication of 20μg% instead of up to 9μg% which is the limit for young drivers.

In three other cases of positive pre-testing driving under the influence of drugs, drivers were initially suspended by members of the Police Department after driving their vehicles at excessive speed. One of the drivers, a 34-year-old man, was driving on a road in Famagusta, at a speed of 94 km, instead of 50. The 34-year-old is an apprentice driver and was driving his car without being accompanied by a licensed driver and without being covered by a safety certificate.

The other two drivers, young men aged 19 and 21, were driving on roads in the Larnaca area, at a speed of 99 km instead of 50 and at a speed of 90 km instead of 65, respectively.

Of the twelve cases that have arisen in the last two weeks, five have arisen in Paphos province, three in Larnaca province, two in Famagusta province and two in Nicosia province.
