'COCOS' THE PAPHOS PELICAN HAS PASSED AWAY

Filenews 21 April 2021 - by Dora Christodoulou

Just 24 hours before he was due to reappear, after a whole year, in front of his thousands of fans, "Cocos", the famous pelican of the port of Kato Paphos, has passed away.

The pelican who arrived to become a television reporter on the BBC, on German state television, on channels in France, Denmark and even Brazil, died in deep old age, as his owner and owner of the restaurant bearing his name, Pelican Restaurant, Andros Papiris, told "F" yesterday.

"Cocos" was at that time of the crown, isolated in the special facilities that were made for his comfortable living, at the residence of its owner. Mr. Papiris points out that the pelican continued throughout this period of lockdown or partial commercial activity to remain sheltered from any eventuality in the special cages made for his living, while even his favourite water was missing, since even the swimming pool of the house was often used for his bathroom.

"Unfortunately, however, the time crew also arrived for the favourite of all visitors to the port, "Coco"," said Andros Papiris. "Having reached the highest life expectancy of the species, at more than 25 years, "Cocos" has passed away, having recently begun to manifest strongly the consequences of old age".

The value attributed by the owners of the pelican to him is also shown by the fact that "Cocos" was the first bird to undergo specialized and costly surgeries, in a special animal clinic, to repair wounds to the wings and other parts of his body a few years ago.
