VOTING
As you are all aware, UK expats, prior to Brexit, were allowed to vote in local elections, as were all European residents in Cyprus.
Post-Brexit, I have been trying to find out what the situation is as regards UK expats and I am still waiting to hear. We have, of course, lost our ability to vote in the European elections.
Post-Brexit, some European countries have allowed UKexpats to retain their vote and ability to stand in local elections. It is understood that Cyprus will be making a decision 'shortly'.
There is also the question of non-European residents not having a vote in local elections - if they can acquire property and pay their taxes, then it would seem only fair and reasonable that voting in local elections is extended to all non-European residents who are property owners. Those who have acquired Cypriot Citizenship will be able to register for a vote in the Government and local elections.
In the meantime, you will have read about a possible 'referendum' on the local government reorganisation. If this takes place it will be on 30 May when there are the Cypriot Government elections. This means that the Cyprus Government will need to make a decision before May [and probably 2 April when there is the cut-off for registering for the Government elections] as to whether UK expats will retain their vote and, if so, how they will have a say in any referendum.
Further information will be provided when it is available.
