PANDEMIC FOCUS ON LIMASSOL - OVER-TRANSMISSION IN SCHOOLS

 Filenews 5 March 2021

Spread of the virus in the Limassol-focused community, results from the data of the national reference of the last 14 days. At the same time, over-transmission of the virus occurs in schools, with the Ministry of Health pointing out that the epidemiological picture of the country is extremely dynamic and easily reversible.

The following are highlighted in a communication:

  • The weekly positivity rate is on the rise. More specifically, the Rapid Tests programme of the Ministry of Health shows that the positivity rate has increased in the past week and is now at 0.4% from 0.2% last week. In Limassol the rate increased from 0.5% to 0.8%.

  • The breeding number is estimated at 1.59 (1.51-1.67).
  • In Cyprus, the cumulative impact of 14 days is significantly increased to 263.5/100,000 inhabitants compared to 168.7/100,000 last week. Individually, the cumulative impact in Nicosia, Famagusta, Larnaca and Paphos remains below the 150/100,000 threshold set by ECDC, but there is an increase over the previous week. In detail, in Nicosia the cumulative impact is 134,5/100,000 (from 81,4/100,000), in Larnaca 91,9/100,000 (from 65,8/100,000), in Famagusta 61,3/100,000 (from 36,8/100,000), in Paphos 77,6/100,000 (from 34,6/100,000).

  • In Limassol the morbidity load is very high, with the cumulative incidence of 14 days exceeding the limit of 500/100,000 and reaching 641,2/100,000. According to the ECDC classification, areas with a cumulative incidence of 14 days greater than 500/100,000 are classified in deep red.

  • 68% of cases were in Limassol Province (1,592 out of a total of 2,340 cases).
  • The cumulative impact of 14 days has increased significantly in people under 19 years of age, mainly due to flocks to schools, but also to productive ages 20-60. In the over-60s, the cumulative incidence increased slightly.

  • In hospitals, the situation remains manageable for the time being. The daily numbers of admissions and nurses are 8 and 79 respectively (mobile averages of 7 days) respectively. As shown in the following chart, the large volume of new imports (mobile average of 7 days) remains from Limassol, with 72% of those hospitalized in Limassol Province (67 cases).

Compared to the ages of people admitted for hospitalization, as shown in the chart below, there is currently no increase in older people, who are likely to end up.

In addition, the Ministry of Health points out that the situation in hospitals at present remains manageable. In combination with the development of vaccinations, alertness and care are needed to keep the Health System in a controlled state, without increasing serious hospitalizations. Faithful adherence to individual protection measures is extremely important especially at a time when the country is trying to restart.
