Filenews 9 March 2021
Opened today at 8 a.m., with 22,808 appointments, the Vaccination Portal, as part of the implementation of the National Vaccination Plan for COVID-19, to arrange appointments at the Vaccination Centres operating in all provinces. Priority for arranging appointments is for people aged 67 and over.
As announced by the Ministry of Health, as of Sunday, 7 March, 99,275 vaccinations were carried out, of which 70,534 are vaccinations with the 1st dose and 28,741 are for people who received both doses and completed their vaccination. At the same time, the 1st dose of the vaccine was administered to 1,277 people in vulnerable groups of the population. The vaccination rate of people with an increased risk of severe COVID-19 disease increases in the coming days, with the aim of covering, at least with the 1st dose, approximately 30,000 people by the end of the month.
According to data from the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC), Cyprus has vaccinated 9.2% of the population aged 18 and over with the 1st dose and is in 3rd place in The States of Europe in terms of vaccination coverage.
At the same time, based on data published by ourWorldInData website, Cyprus remains at the fore among European Union states in administering at least one dose of vaccines, with an average of 11.42 doses per 100 people (data until 5 March). At the same time, Cyprus has achieved at a very high rate its main objective of ensuring the protection, through vaccination, of elderly people over the age of 75, who have an increased chance of serious disease and death. At the same time, following ecdc recommendations, Cyprus has reached the European Union's target of vaccinating at least 80% of health professionals by March.
Cyprus continues vaccinations on the basis of the available licensed vaccines it receives on a weekly basis from Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca. It is expected that within the week the European Medicines Agency will assess Johnson&Johnson's application for authorisation of its single-dose vaccine.
