Information from the Electronic Crime Sub-Directorate
According to reports made to the Police, deft people visit websites where various items and services are
advertised for sale, and show an interest in buying products.
They then contact the advertiser and inform them that they have already purchased the product by
sending them an online link to confirm the purchase and arrange the payment. When the advertiser
visits this misleading website (other than the advertiser's original website), he is asked to fill in his card
details (Number, expiration date, CCV, etc.) in order to deposit the corresponding amount of the transaction.
The above tactic is another case of phishing-type online fraud, which aims to collect all the necessary
information concerning their victims' payment card and then use it to extract money.
To prevent similar incidents of fraud, the Police recommend special attention to the public, especially
when citizens are asked to disclose their personal information, such as card numbers, contact
numbers, e-mail addresses, passwords, etc.
Furthermore, they should ensure that any website with which they have been linked is the authentic
website of the store from which they intend to purchase any product.
