COVID-19 - VITAMIN D ADMINISTRATION REDUCES MORTALITY BY 60%

 Filenews 16 February 2021

Preventive administration of high-dose vitamin D to patients with coronavirus once admitted to hospital could reduce deaths by 60%, according to a newer study.

Research by the University of Barcelona showed that patients treated with calsifediol, i.e. a high-dose vitamin D drug administered to people with chronic renal failure, showed a significantly better clinical picture, most did not need hospitalization in ICU and eventually recorded reduced death rates.

A study carried out at Barcelona's Del Mar hospital showed that 10% of patients admitted with coronavirus die within a month, as the British Telegraph writes.

However, of those whose lives he lost 15% of the control group who had not taken vitamin D, while of the group of patients who had taken vitamin, he ended up with only 6.5%.

"The results show that early administration of calsifediol is critical to reducing mortality. The results make us believe that vitamin D reduces the cytokine storm, which is associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome in Covid-19 infection and causes death in many cases," the study authors say.

Prevent

At the same time, experts argue that an adequate amount of vitamin D in the body could play a role in preventing Covid-19 infection.

Vitamin D is produced during our exposure to the sun and is vital for maintaining healthy bones, a strong muscle system as well as a good immune system.

Other studies have shown that vitamin D has a protective effect against various acute respiratory infections, as it regulates the response of white blood cells and prevents them from releasing inflammatory cells due to the body's overreaction to virus invasion.

The study was pre-published in the scientific journal The Lancet and has not yet been fully evaluated by independent researchers.

However, to date, dozens of studies have been carried out on the benefits of vitamin D in patients with coronavirus, but no formal directive has been given in Europe and the USA on preventive dietary supplement intake or a guideline for its administration to hospitals and covid-19 patients.
