A major reversal occurred in the reform of the Municipalities which, from 13-15 originally planned, increased along the way to 17, while the final bill now under discussion provides for 20 Municipalities, which exceeds the policy announced by the government. And that's to satisfy everyone involved, from mayors to parties.
Of the main changes the creation of three autonomous Municipalities in Free Ammostos (Paralimni, Ayia Napa and Deryneia). The Municipality of Strovolos is left intact.
Under this Law, the new municipalities are established, which consist of municipal departments, as follows:
Nicosia Province:
- Nicosia Municipality, based in Nicosia, which consists of the municipalities of Nicosia, Agios Dometios, Agkomies and Aglantzias, which are renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of Nicosia;
- Strovolos Municipality, based in Strovolos;
- Municipality of Lakatamia, based in Lakatamia, which consists of the municipalities of Lakatamia and Tseri, as well as the community settlement of Anthoupolis, which are renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of Lakatamia;
- Municipality of Latsia-Geri, based in Latsia, which consists of the municipalities of Latsia and Geri, which are renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of Latsia-Geri;
- Municipality of South Nicosia-Idalia, based in Idalia, which consists of the municipality of Idalia and the communities of Alhambra, Lympia, Island, Pera Cholio and Potamia, renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of South Nicosia-Idalia;
Limassol Province:
- Limassol Municipality, based in Limassol, which consists of the municipalities of Limassol and Mesa Neighbourhood, as well as the community of Tserkez Tsiftlik, renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of Limassol;
- Municipality of Eastern Limassol, based in Agios Athanasios, which consists of the municipalities of Agios Athanasios and Germasogia, as well as the communities of Agios Tychos, Moudayakas, Arkountas, Finicari, Armenianhori and Mathikolonis, renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of Eastern Limassol;
- Municipality of Polemidia, based in Polemidia, consisting of the municipality of Kato Milidia and the community of Ano Milidia, renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of Polemidia;
- Municipality of West Limassol, based in Ipson, which consists of the municipality of Ipson and the communities of Asomatos, Sotira, Erimis, Colossi, Trajoniou, Akrotiri, Episkopi and Kantos, renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of West Limassol;
Larnaca Province:
- Municipality of Larnaca, based in Larnaca, which consists of the municipalities of Larnaca, Aradippou, Levivadia and Oroklini, which are renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of Larnaca;
- Municipality of Meneou-Dromolaxia, based in Dromolaxia, which consists of the municipalities of Dromolaxia and Meneou, as well as the community of Pervolia, which are renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of Meneou-Dromolaxia;
- Municipality of Lefkara, based in Lefkara, which consists of the municipality of Lefkara and the communities of Vavlas, Delikopou, Kato Dry, Kato Lefkara and Kornos, which are renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of Lefkara;
- Municipality of Athens, based in Athens, which consists of the municipality of Atheinos and the community of Avdelleros, renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of Athens;
Paphos Province:
- Municipality of Paphos, based in Paphos, which consists of the municipality of Paphos and the community of Konia, renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of Paphos;
- Municipality of Eastern Paphos, based in Geroskipou, which consists of the municipality of Geroskipou and the communities of Acheleia, Timis, Agia Marinauda, Agia Varvara, Anaritas and Mandria, renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of East Paphos;
- Municipality of West Paphos, based in Pegia, which consists of the municipality of Pegia and the communities of Embas, Lembas, Kissonerga and Chlorakas, which are renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of West Paphos;
- Municipality of Chrysochous Town, based in Chrysochous Town, which consists of the municipality of Chrysochous Town and the communities of Argakas, Makoudas, Chrysochous, Goudi, Pelathousa, Kinousa, Neo Chorio, Steni, Peristeron and Lysos, renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of Chrysochous City;
Famagusta Province:
- Municipality of Paralimni, based in Paralimni;
- Municipality of Ayia Napa, based in Ayia Napa, which consists of the municipalities of Ayia Napa and Sotira, as well as the community of Liopetri, which are renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of Ayia Napa;
- Municipality of Deryneia, based in Deryneia, which consists of the municipality of Deryneia and the communities of Frenarous and Acheritou, which are renamed in the respective homonymous municipal departments of the Municipality of Deryneia.
Municipalities located on the Territory of the Republic under Turkish occupation and established under the provisions of laws prior to this Law and/or the repealed Law shall continue to exist as municipalities without their association with other municipalities.
NB - Tala - it is likely that Tala will join with Tremithousa, Mesoghi, and Mesa Chorio as one community. Tala is a council - not a Municipality.
