A new restriction prohibiting the use of carcinogenic, mutagenic, toxic to reproduction, allergens, corrosives or eye irritants of chemicals in tattoo dyes and permanent makeup products has been adopted at European level.
According to a notice transmitted by the GM, tattoo inks may contain dangerous chemicals known or suspected to cause cancer, genetic mutations, toxic effects on reproduction, allergies or other adverse effects on humans.
As noted there is widespread use of these products, since 12% of Europeans and 24% of young people (18-35 years old) have some kind of tattoo, while 3-20% of the population has undergone permanent makeup. In addition, 68% of people with tattoos report skin problems.
'As a result of these concerns, a new restriction has been adopted at European level, which has been included in Annex XVII to the European REACH Regulation (No. 1907/2006/EC), for which the Department of Labour Inspection of the Ministry of Labour, Welfare and Social Insurance is responsible".
In particular, it is noted that after 4.1.2022 preparations (chemical mixtures) intended for tattoo applications must not contain chemicals with the above classification, chemicals prohibited or restricted for use under the European Cosmetics Regulation (1223/2009/EC) and specific dyes, metals and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, as set out in an Annex to the restriction. Also, after 4.1.2023 the use of Pigment Blue and Pigment Green dyes in these products is prohibited.
In addition, all chemical mixtures intended for tattooing should be marked with the statement "Mixture for use in tattoos or permanent makeup", the unique batch reference number, list of ingredients and if applicable the declarations "Contains Nickel. It can cause allergic reactions", "Contains Chromium(VI). It can cause allergic reactions."
