Filenews 19 January 2021
The Department of Road Transport of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works announces that, as a result of the withdrawal of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union, for vehicles coming from it, the provisions of the Regulations concerning vehicles coming from third countries (non-EU members) apply.
In particular, the following shall apply:
A. Vehicle of category M1 (saloon - up to 8 passenger seats not including driver)
It may be registered, provided that on the date of its arrival in a legal port of the Republic it is up to five years old, that period calculated from the date on which the vehicle is registered in any country as new.
It is clarified that the above does not apply to a vehicle of category M1 that has already been transported or imported into the Republic from the United Kingdom and has not yet been registered or will be loaded to a legal port of the Republic of Cyprus by Monday 15/2/2021. These vehicles will be able to register at any time, regardless of whether their age exceeds five years.
In order to register a vehicle of category M1, it must be accompanied by its authentic registration certificate from the UK ("Registration Certificate – V5c"), a certificate of suitability (MOT) has been issued for it in Cyprus and a European Integrated Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) or Individual Vehicle Type Approval (SVA) has been issued for it in Cyprus.
The U.K. registration certificate (issued until 31/12/2020) is sufficient evidence that there is a WVTA for the vehicle, provided that it bears an indication of vehicle type-approval (WVTA). The indication to be searched in V5c is in the 'K' (Type Approval Number) and is in the form e.g. 'e4*2007/46*0186*11'. In the event that this indication is not present, the vehicle must receive SVA type-approval in Cyprus in order to register.
B. Vehicles of category M2 and M3 (Buses) and category N1, N2 and N3 (transport of goods – e.g. double-cars, pick-up, trucks)
They are registered regardless of their age, if there is:
(g) evidence is provided or there is evidence that the emissions of gaseous and particulate pollutants of the vehicle (engine) are consistent with the requirements in force in European law on the date on which the vehicle was registered in any country for the first time;
(ii) equipped with a Brake Anti-Lock System (A.B.S.).
The UK registration certificate (V5c – issued until 31/12/2020) is again sufficient proof that the requirement set out in paragraph B(i) above is complied with, provided that the machinery carried by the vehicle during its inspection is the same as that indicated in that registration certificate. Where the machine is different, documentation is required that the new machine complies with the corresponding 'EURO' (e.g. manufacturer's or dealer's certificate and/or sufficient information from technical manuals of the machine, etc.).
C. L-class vehicles (motorcycles, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles)
A vehicle of category L shall be registered irrespective of its age, provided that it is accompanied by the European Certificate of Conformity (CoC) – (CP) of the vehicle in force on the date of its first registration. A copy of the PS issued by the manufacturer or his representative shall also be accepted.
The UK registration certificate (issued until 31/12/2020), which is sufficient proof that the vehicle has a WVTA and therefore a PS has been issued, provided that the UK registration certificate bears the indication of vehicle type-approval (WVTA), is also accepted.
