The Ministry of Health announced that today, January 18, 2021, five people have died of COVID-19 disease, bringing the total number of deaths to 175. At the same time, 162 new cases of coronavirus were announced.
Detail:
- 199 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, 55 of whom are in serious condition.
- A total of 9,384 disease detection tests have been carried out using the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.
- 162 (positivity rate: 1.73%) new cases of COVID-19 have been identified by molecular (PCR) and antigen rapid test, bringing the total number of cases to 29,130.
A. Deaths from COVID-19:
The five people who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 concern:
- A man, aged 89, with underlying diseases, who ended up in Limassol General Hospital, after being transferred from the nursing home Nea Eleousa Agros.
- Man, aged 91, with underlying diseases, who ended up in Nicosia General Hospital.
- Woman, aged 92, with underlying diseases, who ended up in Nicosia General Hospital.
- Man, aged 79, with underlying illnesses, who ended up in Famagusta General Hospital.
- Woman, aged 88, with underlying diseases, who ended up in Famagusta General Hospital.
Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 175, of which:
- 116 men (66%), and
- 59 women (34%).
The average age of the deceased from the disease is 80 years.
B. Hospitalized:
A total of 199 patients with COVID-19 disease are hospitalized in THE OKYP hospital, 55 of whom are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.
Of the 55 patients critical, 35 are intubated, three are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit

C. Positive events COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):
Of the 9,384 laboratory diagnoses currently carried out, 1,663 were carried out using the molecular method (PCR) and 7,721 using the antigen rapid test, 162 cases of COVID-19 disease were identified, resulting as follows:
- 43 cases from 251 samples taken through the process of tracing contacts of already confirmed cases.
- 6 cases from 577 samples taken as part of a passenger check at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
- 1 case of 19 samples taken as part of a re-examination carried out on the 7th day following the arrival of persons who have returned from the United Kingdom and are under mandatory restriction in hotels in the Republic.
- 18 cases from 442 samples taken through a private initiative.
- 13 cases from 239 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
- 1 case of 135 samples taken as part of the referral program by Personal Physicians and special teams control through public health clinics.
- 80 cases from 7,721 samples tested using the antigen rapid test.
