Shortly after midnight, members of the Police and Fire Department went to an area in Famagusta province, where around 40 people had gathered, which set fire to a number of mopeds that they themselves transported to the site. Some of the suspects had their faces covered in hoods, while others carried masks on their faces.
According to the Police, while its members and members of the Fire Department were trying to extinguish the fire, some of the people who had gathered at the scene began cursing and throwing stones at the officers and firefighters.
Then, when the fire was extinguished, they attacked the members of the Fire Department, resulting in a member of the Police using his service weapon, firing a warning shot into the air, thus preventing the attack and forcing them to retreat, but they continued from a distance to throw various objects towards the firefighters and a vehicle of the Fire Department.
As a result of the throwing of the objects, a member of the Fire Department was injured. He went for medical examinations to Famagusta General Hospital, where he was found to have suffered swelling in his right leg and after being given first aid he was discharged.
With the suppression of the incidents and after the persons who had gathered at the scene fled, tests were carried out at the scene, which will continue in the early hours of today.
In connection with the incidents, the police are investigating a case of nuisance, arson, assault against a law enforcement officer, common assault, assault with actual bodily harm and causing damage to property.
The case is being investigated by the Famagusta T.E.O.
Meanwhile, in several areas of free Famagusta young people continued in the evening the "tradition" that wants them to parade in the villages of the area with various kinds of vehicles throwing fireworks and firecrackers.
